Folkways Records FR 8975, this is a US pressing of the impossible to find “Mushroom Ceremony Of the Mazatec Indians Of Mexico” This recording, made by Gordon Wasson in 1956, attempts to chronicle a religious ceremony involving the ingestation of psychedelic mushrooms by Indians who are attempting to communicate with the Divine Spirit.

Symbolism of the Rose Cross

The cross is a symbol that is about as universal and ancient as any symbol that has emerged out of man’s psyche. The cross symbolizes the meeting at right angles of horizontals and perpendiculars. Forces going in quite opposite directions but meeting at a central point, a common ground. It can symbolize the union of opposites and the dualism in nature. It can be the outstretch archetypal man with the infinite possibilities of growth being immortal. It represents eternal life. The cross can symbolize the decent of Spirit into matter. It is the intersection of the level of time with the Eternity of the Spirit.

The cross is the axis of the cycle of the year whose spokes are the equinoxes and solstices. It is the crossroads where the four directions meet. In a Christian sense the cross signifies acceptance of sacrifice, suffering, and death as well as immortality. There is a legend that the cross of Christ was made out of wood from the Tree of Knowledge, the cause of the Fall, making it the instrument of Redemption. In the Egyptian mythos the crux ansata or – a type of cross – was a symbol of life, immortality, and health. It is held by the gods and goddesses. It also represented the union of Isis and Osiris.

Numerologically, the cross is sometimes represented by the number four. Within our own teachings: “No.4 is the Mystic number, and indicates the operative influence of the four elements. Under this number, or the geometrical square, Pythagoras communicated the Ineffable Name of God to his chosen disciples.” In the Hebrew alphabet the last letter is called Tav. And Tav means “mark” or “cross” and its original form was written much like ankh or cross. I could go on with many more examples but I think we can see that the cross transcends human culture in both time and space. It is a symbol that ties us all together as a Brotherhood of Mankind. It is a symbol that goes to the very root of our being.

The Liberation Through Hearing During the Intermediate State differentiates the intermediate state between lives into three bardos: The chikhai bardo or “bardo of the moment of death”, which features the experience of the “clear light of reality”, or at least the nearest approximation of which one is spiritually capable. The chonyid bardo or “bardo of the experiencing of reality”, which features the experience of visions of various Buddha forms (or, again, the nearest approximations of which one is capable).The sidpa bardo or “bardo of rebirth”, which features karmically impelled hallucinations which eventually result in rebirth. (Typically imagery of men and women passionately entwined. )

The Liberation Through Hearing During the Intermediate State also mentions three other bardos: those of “life” (or ordinary waking consciousness), of “dhyana” (meditation), and of “dream” (the dream state during normal sleep). Together these “six bardos” form a classification of states of consciousness into six broad types. Any state of consciousness can form a type of “intermediate state”, intermediate between other states of consciousness. Indeed, one can consider any momentary state of consciousness a bardo, since it lies between our past and future existences; it provides us with the opportunity to experience reality, which is always present but obscured by the projections and confusions that are due to our previous unskillful actions.

Schumann’s Resonances and Human Psychobiology

Lewis B. Hainsworth of Western Australia first recognized the relationship of brain wave frequencies to naturally circulating rhythmic signals, known as Schumann’s Resonances (SR), in the space between the surface of the earth and the ionosphere. Hainsworth imparted this awareness to Dr. Robert O. Becker, noted electromagnetics pollution expert, and to Harvard neurologists as early as 1975. In 1977, the relationship between brain-wave rhythms and natural earth ELF signals became the basis for Itzhak Bentov’s Stalking the Wild Pendulum (Dutton, 1977).

Later research confirmed a relationship to health, well-being, and even ESP or psi phenomena. Hainsworth sent up a clarion cry against hazardous EM pollution. Dangers pale compared to the global threat of technologies such as HAARP, which send violent pulsations into the earth’s ionosphere, potentially disrupting the entire electromagnetic shield of the earth. Some suggest that the frequency of the basic SR is changing in value, possibly threatening the whole biosphere, human welfare, and our evolutionary future. All biological processes are a function of electromagnetic field interactions, which are the connecting link between the world of form and resonant patterns. EM fields store gestalts or patterns of information. The bridge connecting solar system resonances and brain frequencies resides in our human DNA helix, which evolved in this environment.
