Uncontacted Tribe – Human Planet: Jungles – BBC One

http://youtu.be/5lWVVFHzuLE

New footage of one of the world’s last uncontacted tribes living in the Brazilian rainforest.

Jose Carlos Meirelles works for FUNAI, a government agency that protects Brazil’s indigenous people. Because of the threat posed by illegal logging and mining, he believes that the fight to protect these people depends on proving and publicising their existence. This aerial footage was shot from 1km away using a stabilised zoom lens.

Brazil is thought to be home to around 70 isolated tribes.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZFP5HfJPTY&ob=av3e

Filmmaker Werner Herzog is well known for his ambitious movies. His latest project, “Cave of Forgotten Dreams,” may be his wildest film yet.

The documentary, which hits theaters this spring, focuses on the Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc Cave in France. The cave is tens of thousands of years old, and for many thousands of those years no human being knew about it. Three French explorers discovered the cave in 1994.

So, what makes this cave worthy of a 3D documentary from one of the world’s great filmmakers? For one, the cave contains amazing detailed drawings that defy explanation.

Shamash Tablet

Babylonian, early 9th century BC
From Sippar, southern Iraq

This stone tablet shows Shamash, the sun-god, seated under an awning and holding the rod and ring, symbols of divine authority. The symbols of the Sun, Moon and Venus are above him with another large sun symbol supported by two divine attendants. On the left is the Babylonian king Nabu-apla-iddina between two interceding deities.

The cuneiform text describes how the Temple of Shamash at Sippar had fallen into decay and the image of the god had been destroyed. During the reign of Nabu-apla-iddina, however, a terracotta model of the statue was found on the far side of the Euphrates and the king ordered a new image be constructed of gold and lapis lazuli. The text then confirms and extends the privileges of the temple.

8000 Year-Old Sun Temple Found in Bulgaria

The oldest temple of the Sun has been discovered in northwest Bulgaria, near the town of Vratsa, aged at more then 8000 years, the Bulgarian National Television (BNT) reported on December 15 2010.

The Bulgarian ‘Stonehenge’ is hence about 3000 years older than its illustrious English counterpart. But unlike its more renowned English cousin, the Bulgarian sun temple was not on the surface, rather it was dug out from under tons of earth and is shaped in the form of a horse shoe, the report said.

The temple was found near the village of Ohoden. According to archaeologists, the prehistoric people used the celestial facility to calculate the seasons and to determine the best times for sowing and harvest. The site was also used for rituals, offering gifts to the Sun for fertility as BNT reported.

This area of Bulgaria was previously made famous because remnants of the oldest people who lived in this part of Europe were found.Archaeologists also found dozens of clay and stone disks in the area of the temple.

“The semantics of the disks symbolise the disk of the Sun itself, which means that this is the earliest ever temple dedicated to the worship of the Sun God, discovered on our lands,” archaeologist Georgi Ganetsovski told the BNT

New Race/Species of Human Discovered

http://youtu.be/bGbFKt2TzzQ

A mysterious new species of human being who lived alongside our ancestors 30,000 years ago has been discovered by scientists. The cavemen, called Denisovans, was identified from DNA taken from a tooth and finger bone found in a cave in Siberia.

The finding means there were at least three distinct members of the human family tree alive at the time – modern humans (including European Cro Magnon), Denisovans and Neanderthals.

African Fractals: Ron Eglash on TED.com

“Ethno-mathematician” Ron Eglash is the author of African Fractals, a book that examines the fractal patterns underpinning architecture, art and design in many parts of Africa. By looking at aerial-view photos — and then following up with detailed research on the ground — Eglash discovered that many African villages are purposely laid out to form perfect fractals, with self-similar shapes repeated in the rooms of the house, and the house itself, and the clusters of houses in the village, in mathematically predictable patterns.

As he puts it: “When Europeans first came to Africa, they considered the architecture very disorganized and thus primitive. It never occurred to them that the Africans might have been using a form of mathematics that they hadn’t even discovered yet.”
